April, 2023 – Brazil
From Pledge to Action: We are committed to regrowing forests sustainably and to help protect biodiversity. The Tribo Xokleng tribe, working to save their endangered Araucaria trees and their culture through the Instituto Zag, are in perfect alignment with our regenerative strategy.
Being aware of the impacts that our activities have on our planet, our efforts go beyond implementing our sustainability strategy. In terms of biodiversity, our main goal is to contribute, in a regenerative way, to haltering and reversing biodiversity loss by 2030, and to support the restoration of our environment and the ecosystems where we operate.
For this reason, Evertis partnered with the Instituto Zag in Brazil, an organization that is fighting for the preservation of the Araucaria Angustifolia forests, for the land of their ancestors, and for their indigenous culture, wisdom and human rights. After many years of suffering land grabbing, massacres, human rights violations, illegal logging, deforestation amongst others, and nearly being exterminated, the last heirs of this culture are determined in their fight for their land, and to preserve the Araucaria tree and forest.
This tree has a vast importance in the life of the Xoklengs as well as for biodiversity and conservation efforts. They depend on the Araucaria tree for food, use its medicinal properties to treat illness and consider it a central element of their spirituality. The Araucaria tree itself is two steps away from being completely extinct according to the IUCN (The International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Endangered Species. If the Araucaria becomes extinct, so does the Tribo Xokleng and their cultural heritage, as well as their wisdom. For the oxygen, biodiversity chain and human development, it will be a great loss and another step backwards in our restoration efforts.
We turn our pledge to action through this collaboration with the Instituto Zag, and as one of our first actions, we will support their next campaign of Araucaria planting, starting this month. Part of our Evertis Brazil team will have the opportunity and honor to participate in the tree planting, as well as witness the importance of a sustainable forest regenerative practice, all whilst recognizing the rights of indigenous people and local communities on fighting the current global climate crisis.
We are very thankful to Carl and Isabell Gakran, founders of Instituto Zag, for letting us collaborate with them and for introducing us to their values. They shared the following message with us, which we would like to share with you:
"To live in a more balanced world we have to be aware that every human action in its environment causes a reaction, we have to show respect for what nature gives us by reforesting, living with animals, not throwing garbage.”
